In order to learn how to have an appropriate use of social networks is essential to take into consideration the concept of slow navigation, which takes inspiration from the digital mindfulness. It is a form of meditation applied to digital life.
Objectives of Slow-navigation:
● develop a more conscious use of smartphones, computer and IT device;
● create a right balance between real life and digital life.
The section ‘Slow Navigation’ is divided into 2 Units:
● Unit 1 Slow navigation, a new digital style;
● Unit 2: Self-limitation, acquire competence of limit;
Technologies have entered our lives and have created a real form of dependency, often not recognized. There is no a single moment in which we are not connected among Whatsapp, SMS, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, Messenger, email, online games, GPS navigator, news, weather forecast, e-commerce, Tripadvisor, etc. It seems that all of us- with different involvement- are addicted to digital life. An international study carried out by Gfk, on a sample of 22 thousands of participants from 17 countries, shows that at least one third of Europeans are internet-addicted. 42% of them states that being connected is essential. 29% admits that has experienced a high form of addiction and the 34% can’t take a break from smartphone, PC and tablet on a daily basis. But an excessive use of electronic devices could have some ‘side effects’ on users. According to a recent study carried out by the University of Stanford there are severe consequences provoked by an overuse of devices. The most common are memory disorders, drops in concentration, anxiety, insomnia and so on. Technology is meant to make our life easier but each app is build to create a sort of addiction or a condition in which you can’t live without. We are pushed to spend more and more time on social networks: chatting, playing, sharing or posting news on our feeds such as photos, videos, vocal messages etc. Someone could also develop a kind of addiction by refreshing his inbox and checking nevrotically his email. With a smartphone we are always online. That’s why it is highly important to restore a balance and a new awareness in order to face technological developments. We are almost convinced by the fact that living without a smartphone, not being on social networks or checking news could be impossible as being always connected turned out to be essential for our lives. On the other side, having Internet at your disposal comes to be necessary in our lives. So how to balance the real need of being online with a potential overuse and internet-addiction? Slow navigation and self-limitation on the use of social networks and internet could help us. Let’s learn how to set a new balance and take control of ourselves and our real needs, enjoying life and our spare time. We might find pleasure in using technology without stress with a discovered wisdom and awareness. It is also important to learn and develop good practices in tech-life balance, using technology in a way that doesn’t have a negative effect on your personal life or relationships.
